Superdry was founded in 2003 in Cheltenham, England, by Julian Dunkerton and James Holder, two entrepreneurs with backgrounds in vintage retail and skatewear design. After a trip to Tokyo left them captivated by the city's bold typography and street style, the pair returned home determined to fuse what they'd seen with American vintage influences and the quality construction associated with British craftsmanship — even borrowing the brand's name from a mistranslated Japanese beer label spotted during their travels. That cross-cultural mash-up became Superdry's signature: oversized logo tees, quilted and hooded jackets, and layered graphic prints that combine Japanese characters with Americana-inspired detailing. The brand quickly grew from a market stall into a global streetwear phenomenon, recognized for its distinctive aesthetic and quality fabrics. Today, under renewed focus on design and craftsmanship, Superdry continues to build on the same restless, cross-cultural energy that defined it from the start.
